What is Complementary protection, asylum, who is a temporary refuge?

Complementary protection is a form of international protection granted to those asylum seekers who do not qualify for asylum, but there are serious grounds for believing that they would be exposed to a real threat of serious injustice if they returned to their country of origin and therefore origin cannot return.

Complementary protection is generally provided to civilians fleeing general violence linked to war.

Temporary refuge is provided for the purpose of protecting foreigners from war, the consequences of a humanitarian catastrophe or a systematic or mass human rights violation in the country of origin of applicants for temporary refuge. This is the fastest form of protection provided. The Government of the Slovak Republic shall determine by decision the beginning, conditions and end of the temporary refuge.

Asylum is a form of international protection that can be granted to a person because he or she has legitimate concerns about persecution on racial, national or religious grounds, because of certain political opinions or belonging to a particular social group, and because of those concerns he or she cannot, or does not want to return to the country of origin.
